Who We Are

Our Story

Since Divest Ed was founded in 2018, we have supported the campus fossil fuel divestment movement with leadership development, training, and resources. We’ve co-organized actions in the movement, mobilizing thousands of students in total while yielding several major divestment wins. Not only do we plan to continue this work in the coming years, but expand and reimagine it. Divest Ed left Better Future Project in December 2021 to become a fiscally sponsored project of Power Shift Network. This transition aligns with Divest Ed’s emerging vision of a powerful, bottom-up, democratic movement that centers student organizers.

The new Divest Ed is a femme, Black led and pro-Black, queer, feminist, collective focused on care, reinvestment, and emergent strategies. Leaving Better Future Project was a major decision and we plan to further shake up the climate movement in the coming years by facilitating escalated direct actions, investing in student leaders, and modeling the world we want to live in within our movement space. We are overjoyed by this transition, and we look forward to supporting student divestment work as we move into this new partnership. We will continue to provide mentorship, fellowship programming, digital organizing tools, general resources, and our time and love to divestment campaigns. We are radically imagining a new potential for our offerings and reach in the work.

Movement Connection (coalitions, etc)

Divest Ed invests in value-aligned, mutually beneficial, and caring coalition spaces. These coalitions are meaningfully integrated in our work and build people power. Divest Ed is especially interested in building power with folks outside of the climate movement. We welcome mutually-beneficial partnerships; please reach out if you’d like to collaborate!

Our primary partnerships currently are the following:

The College Climate Coalition

Divest Canada Coalition

Stop the Money Pipeline

UnKoch My Campus

The Post Landfill Action Network

Power Shift Network

People & Planet
